Thank you, Newgrounds, for being an actually good site

Slowly but surely, I've been distancing myself from all social platforms that aren't Bluesky and Newgrounds. It seems I made the right decision, with Meta now explicitly allowing hate speech and misinformation on their sites, not that they cared before. I just requested data backups of my Instagram and Facebook accounts and will be deleting both once I receive them.

Google is next, though it will take a couple months to fully rid my life of them, unfortunately. Who would have thought an account spanning the last ten years of your life would contain many things you'd want to ensure are saved before you nuke the whole thing?

But hey, small steps. I've been away from Gmail and Windows for a while now (Linux Mint kicks ass btw) and I'm happy keeping Bluesky and Newgrounds, the latter of which is damn near perfect for creative people to share their passions. We're far away from data stealing corporations and other capitalist bullshit factories here, and that alone makes me happy.

My only suggestions as a musician are involve some changes to the the way this site handles audio. Like, visual artists can upload super high quality renders of their pieces but I can't upload lossless audio? Not to mention the lack of ability to organize our tracks and how they're displayed on our profile. It's just odd lol

There's always room for improvement, but I still love it here, and I hope Newgrounds continues being the best damn site on the internet.

Thanks, Tom.

Not to be too pushy, but you 'got' supporter status. You can just post suggestions in a certain thread* till the cows come home. And I already know that Audio Portal Moderator ADR3-N will love the point you made above. ;)

That being said, most 'Art Portal-artists' get their work converted into .WEBP - which is proprietary Microsoft bullshit that nobody in the entire world should use, because it's only going to cause various "unforeseen" issues and it blurs like crazy. Do you see my avatar? I had to put a lot of work into making 'something pixelated' not have a ton of artifacting, just because of the crappy conversion. It's insane. We have .JPG, which can be set to produce great quality for quite a while now, if you're okay with minor loss. We have the lossless .PNG (which can also handle animation, btw)... Along comes Microsoft with a format that's a worse version of both of those combined and people actually use it. I don't get it...

Thanks for the thread, I'll make sure to post there soon!

And yeah .WEBP sucks, fuck Microsoft, but that's really weird NG forces that. I swear I've downloaded art from this site before and always gotten jpgs or pngs, never webp. I don't get why anyone would use Microsoft's thing willingly either.

Oh and you aren't pushy fyi! Thank you for the suggestion!

@Synaptic-Purge I "suspect" the use of .WEBP has to do with bandwidth.

As you probably heard a million times already, NG is run on about 99% supporter donations and 1% Ad-money on "A"-rated submissions. (Which a lot of users probably block.)

I cannot look into the heads of Mr. Fulp and his team, but I "suspect" that they are not super happy with this solution either. The original images/original formats are still being stored on the servers. You can access them by navigating to the original image and replace the .WEBP-file extension with .PNG/.JPG/etc. if you want to store an image in the better quality.

(That's not exactly a 'documented feature', but feel free to share. I learned this from user @YendorNG, who sadly left the community.)
